Fundamentals in Upstream Processing Training Course

This 3-day training course will provide the fundamentals in upstream processing with hands-on practical and theory on bioreactors used for microbial cell cultures. 

The general aims of this training course are to enable a non-expert in the field of upstream processing:

• To be able to understand and perform the main upstream process steps 
• To be able to understand and perform monitoring of the growth of cells 
• To be able to understand the different modes of cell culture (batch, fed-batch, chemostat, perfusion) 
• To have the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to know what types of bioreactors to use at which stage of a process and for what purpose 
• To be able to set-up a bioreactor, to sterilize a bioreactor, to inoculate a bioreactor under sterile conditions and to monitor the progress of cell growth and metabolites production during cell culture 
• To provide the basis for more advanced studies to become an expert in the field (if desired) 
• To enable people in DSP to transfer to USP 

This training program includes practical parts with the growth of bacteria in flasks and bioreactors. The theory of cell growth, seed train development, bioreactors and their sterilization will be addressed. The modes of operation (batch, fed-batch, continuous and perfusion), substrate feeding, process monitoring and control techniques will be reviewed and discussed. Cell harvest and primary recovery will also be introduced.
