No deal 2026-2028 with SAGE

Negotiations between the publisher SAGE Publishing and the Swiss Library Consortium have not resulted in a new Read & Publish agreement for the period 2026–2028.

For the HES-SO, this affects the following packages: Communication, Health Science, Sociology, Education, Management & Organization, Psychology.

As of January 1, 2026:

•        The content of SAGE journals published from 2026 onwards is no longer accessible, unless it is already in open access.
•         Permanent access to content from 1999–2025 is guaranteed (depending on institutional subscriptions).
•        It is still possible to publish in hybrid journals free of charge, but articles will not be made freely accessible by the publisher.

Recommendations:

•        Do not pay APCs to publish in open access in SAGE hybrid journals: these “costs in the wild” weaken Switzerland's negotiating position.
•        Give preference to journals covered by a national agreement.
